Return to the Bahamas

Do you find yourself longing for a tropical getaway? For an escape to turquoise waters and pristine white sand beaches? To dine on fresh seafood and explore a colorful island city? If so, you’re in luck, as the beauty of the Bahamas is now within reach, thanks to the return of cruising this summer. Make a long weekend out of it, or stay for a whole week, on a Disney Cruise Line sailing from Florida, with a stop at Disney’s Private Island, Castaway Cay. Here’s a refresher on what you’ll find in the Bahamas.

Delicious Food and Drink

Any foodie will tell you to stop at the “Fish Fry” area of Nassau and indulge as the locals do. A strip of casual restaurants along the beach serves up fresh cuisine with generous portions. Try conch salad, conch fritters, a variety of fried or grilled fish, rice and peas, plantains and more. For dessert or a tasty gift to bring home, try a Bahamian rum cake. And for drinks, a refreshing Bahama Mama cocktail is the ideal refreshment for a beach vacation. Order the famous beverage featuring rum, coconut rum, grenadine, orange juice and pineapple juice. For a behind-the-scenes taste of local spirits, take a tour of John Watling’s Distillery in Nassau and visit the distillery’s bar for Pina Coladas with rum made on-site.

Adventures on the Water

The Bahamas boasts some of the best waters in the world for watersports, from beginning snorkeling to more advanced endeavors. Ernest Hemingway famously loved fishing in the clear, warm waters of the Bahamas—today, you’ll find boat trips offering sport fishing for blue marlin or tuna, or head into deeper water for big game fishing. Take a scuba diving tour to explore colorful coral reefs and perhaps you’ll even spot a shark or two. Go snorkeling right from the beaches to see conch and spiny lobster. Snorkel further out to explore wrecks and underwater sculptures. Swim with turtles, dolphins and pigs on expert-led tours. Take a full-day excursion to Rose Island from Nassau and enjoy a day swimming in a sanctuary for semi-wild pigs.

Cultural Landmarks

The Bahamas has a rich history and culture with a unique blend of British, West African and Spanish influences. Experience this history yourself by visiting top cultural landmarks. A tour of the colorful city of Nassau with its charming pastel buildings will take you to famous sites like the government buildings of Parliament Square, forts including Fort Charlotte built in 1789, Gregory’s Arch and more. See the distinct Bahamian architecture of clapboard cottages designed to keep residents cool, as well as colonial-style buildings in bright shades of pink. Celebrate Bahamian culture by visiting during the Junkanoo Festival, a street parade held the day after Christmas with joyful music, cuisine, costumes and performances.
